1st Grade

The social/emotional foundation in first grade is built around the importance of community and the student’s individual responsibility and place in that community. We approach all subjects (reading, writing, math, science, and social studies) through a unique “systems thinking” lens, and children discover for themselves that any one thing is connected to everything else around them. Fostering a love for creativity and music, celebrating mistakes and their power to move us forward and teach us, and helping students find their active voice to give back to and be a spokesperson for their community, are all-powerful objectives in this transitional and important learning year.

2nd Grade

Our second-grade classroom has its own unique community; Island prep feels that the role of the teacher is to assist each child that enters our classroom in developing his/her own unique learning style. At this grade level, we feel it is so important to incorporate individual hands-on learning with projects at home to engage and stimulate student learning. Second grade is a safe and caring community that encourages our students to comfortably communicate with their peers and teachers and express themselves, discover who they are, and leave the classroom with pride in the person they have become. We as classwork together towards building confidence and self-esteem by presenting our projects with other students, with parents, as well as sharing thoughts during our morning meeting. We foster close relationships with the students in both the upper and lower grades working on projects and reading programs together to facilitate peer encouragement. Every child is unique, and we encourage our class to embrace the differences in each other, learning that everyone has something special to offer. The second graders practice responsibility and community by participating in classroom jobs. We have high expectations and goals for each student and strive to help them to reach their potential.

3rd Grade

In our Third Grade we strive to engage all students in a variety of ways that inspire them, cultivate creativity and find strength in themselves. We work hard to make the classroom environment a family in which everyone feels safe, welcomed, accepted, and treated with respect. It is imperative to take the time to learn each student as an individual and understand what motivates them. In our third-grade classroom, there are many examples of cooperative learning in which students evolve their social skills, learning from each other, and working as a team. It is important that students use their innovative and imaginative skills along with hands-on methods to enrich their educational experience. Our goal is to teach students not only the importance of education but the importance of a whole-child education, allowing them to apply those skills they master in the classroom to real-world experiences. Our third-grade class comes together as a community to lift each other up and to teach each other that there is no better way to succeed than to try.

4th Grade

In Fourth grade, our students focus on the power of change. Through various methods, students will explore the power of change through Florida History, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Technology, Writing, and Presentation. Students are also empowered to think about how changes, even the smallest ones, affect the world around them. We encourage our students to “be the change” they want to see in the world to make a difference for their future.

Our Fourth-grade class also has a strong focus on writing, in which students learn to write from different perspectives, different writing strategies, and creating themes to create divergent writing samples.

Each student sets personal and academic goals for themselves and holds themselves accountable for their own growth and academic gains giving them a strong sense of self-reliance and responsibility.

Our students also build leadership and mentoring skills working with the younger students, through the “Buddy Program”. This is a tremendous confidence builder and reinforces learning by allowing the older students to expand their own vision of themselves.
